作者简介 |
Ren Zhiji (Charles Jen in USA), born in 1930; graduated from the English Dept. of Fudan University in 1956 and worked his way in the academia as an assistant English teacher and lecturer until he was an associated professor in 1980. He also participated in compiling English textbooks for non-majors in early 60’s as well as editing dictionaries in the 70’s. He left Fudan University in 1988 and has been living in Los Angeles ever since.
His interest in translating classical Chinese poetry dates back to the late 90’s of the last century. A late comer, but an addicted one at that, for now he considers it as one of his hobbies. His other hobbies are: music and photography.

Liu Ziyu and I drank at Jinshan Temple and got drunk. I dropped off on Bao Jue Monk's couch. When I woke up, it was dusk and wrote this poem on the wall.（1074）

予以事系御史台狱，狱吏稍见侵，自度不能堪死狱中，不得一别子由，故作二诗授狱卒梁成，以遗子由
I'm detained by the Imperial Inspection Committee for a crime, and the warden has shown a hostile mien. I thought I couldn't die in jail without first bidding farewell to Ziyou. Hence the two poems for Ziyou to be passed on to him by Liang Cheng, the prison guard.（1079）
十二月二十八日蒙恩责授检校水部员外郎黄州团练副使，复用前韵(二首)
On the 28th day of the twelfth month, I was assigned as an outofpayroll deputy inspector, by imperial grace, to train recruits for the Water Department in Huangzhou. Hence these two poems, rhyming in step with the preceding ones. （1079）

XI JIANG YUE
Huangzhou only a short while ago, now journeying along the Qishui River under a spring moon, we stopped at a tavern for a drink and got drunk. We continued our way while there was moon overhead until we were on a bridge. Having removed the saddle, I lay myself down for a break like a drunkard, cushioning my head on a bent arm. When I woke up, it was already dawn, with a riot of mountains around vying for height and waters rippling by underneath. I thought I was in another world and henceforth wrote these words on the bridge post.（1082）
定风波（三月七日沙湖道中遇雨。雨具先去，同行皆狼狈 ，余独不觉。 已而遂晴，故作此词。）
DING FENG BO
On the 7th day of the 3rd month, we were caught up by rain on our way to Shahu. Rain gear having gone ahead, all were made wretched except me, who couldn't care less. A while later, the sun came out. Hence this composition. (1082)

洞仙歌 （余七岁时，见眉山老尼，姓朱，忘其名，年九十余。自言尝随其师入蜀主孟昶宫中，一日大热，蜀主与花蕊夫人夜纳凉摩诃池上，作一词，朱俱能记之。今四十年，朱已死久矣，人无知此词者，但记其首两句，暇日寻味，岂《洞仙歌令》乎？乃为足之云。）
DONG XIAN GE
I was seven years old when I saw this old nun of Meishan Mountain. Her last name was Zhu. I forgot her first name. She was over ninety by then. She said she once went with her teacher to visit the palace of Meng Chang, the King of Shu. One day, it was extremely hot. King Shu and his wife Madame Hua Rui, while enjoying the evening cool on Mohe Lake, improvised a ci, which Zhu remembered every line. Now its forty years since she died, and nobody seems to know anything about this poetic work. I, however, only remember the first two lines and have been ruminating over them whenever I can. Was it done to the tune of “Dong Xian Ge Lin”? Hence this humble attempt at filling out the rest. （1082）

MAN TING FANG
On the 1st day of the 4th month in the 7th year of the Yuanfeng reign (1084), I was leaving Huangzhou for Ruzhou. I bade farewell to two or three gents who lived nextdoor to Snow Hall and met with Li Zhonglan, who came from Jiangdong to say goodbye, so I left this to him. (1084)
如梦令（元丰七年十二月十八日，浴泗州雍熙塔下，戏作《如梦令》阕。此曲本唐庄宗制，名《忆仙姿》，嫌其名不雅，故改为《如梦令》。盖庄宗作此词，卒章云：“因取以为名云。”）
RU MENG LING (LIKE A DREAM)
On the 18th day of the 12th month in the seventh year of the Yuanfeng reign, I bathed under Yong Xi Pagoda in Sizhou and I tried this composition facetiously to the tune of “Ru Meng Ling (Like a Dream)”. The tune originated with Tang Zhuang Zong when it was called “Remembering Divine Beauty”. But the title did not sound elegant enough, so it was changed to “Ru Meng Ling”. For the ci composed by Zhuang Zong ends with these words: “Like a dream, Like a Dream, seeing her off with tears in our eyes.” Hence the present title.（1084）

The song girl of Wang Dingguo, Rounu (literally lithe girl), surnamed Yuwen, was goodlooking and skillful at witty replies. Her family lived in the capital. When Dingguo came back from the south, I asked Rounu, “ Guangnan isn't that good, is it?” Rounu replied, “Where this heart of mine is at peace, there is my home.” Hence this lyrical composition. （1086）
