       听力在英语交际中的重要性是不言而喻的。L.Vandergrift(2007)认为听力理解在语言学习中占有核心地位。W.Rivers(1966)认为有效的交际是建立在听懂对方话语的基础之上的。听力教学在中国也越来越受到重视。《大学英语课程教学要求》（2007）明确地提出：大学英语的教学目标是培养学生的英语综合应用能力，特别是听说能力，使他们在今后的学习、工作和社会交往中能用英语有效地进行交际。
       但是，国内外对听力的研究少之又少。长期以来，教育界、学术界认为听力是被动的过程，认为只要把学生置于听力的环境中，他们就会自然而然地学会听力。也有人认为听力过程与阅读过程是一样的，只要把阅读技巧、策略运用到听力教学中即可。直到20世纪80年代，随着交际法的诞生，听力教学才受到足够的重视，成为一个独立的研究领域。
       听力理解涉及心理语言学、语音学、语义学、语用学、篇章分析、认知学、社会学等诸多领域。F.Ferreira和M.Anes（1994）从心理语言学的角度，从三个方面分析和对比了阅读理解和听力理解。第一，对阅读理解的研究较容易、简便；第二，听力材料的韵律（prosodic）特征必须一致、可控，这比阅读研究困难得多；第三，在实验方法方面，研究阅读理解时，我们可以通过对眼球移动的监控，及时了解读者对阅读材料的理解。但是，我们至今还没有一种可靠的方法，及时、直接、准确地了解听者对听力材料的理解。这些大大增加了听力研究的难度。
       为了让读者，尤其是英语教师，了解国外听力教学和研究的最新动态，为了促进和提高我国，尤其是高等院校，英语听力的教学和研究，有效地提高中国学生的听说能力，我们特此编写了此书。
       我们从国外的有关权威杂志中搜索了最近10年发表的文章，共有100多篇，从中挑选了48篇文章，按8个类别进行分类，每个类别的文章按时间顺序进行排列。由于原文都比较长，为了节省篇幅，我们采用了概述的方法，突出其重点和要点，省略了细节和过程。每篇文章的最后都提供了出处，便于读者查找。另外，对于原文中的关键词，我们给出了原词，便于读者理解。
       囿于时间紧迫，编者学识浅陋，谬误和不足在所难免，望读者不咎指正。
