上海日报:Everything You Want to Know about Heart Disease is here!
发布时间:2018年8月31日

Everything You Want to Know about Heart Disease, a popular science book penned by prestigious cardiology doctors from Hong Kong, now has a second edition in Simplified Chinese.
One of its authors, Dr. Lo Ying-sui, fellow of the American College of Cardiology, the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh and the Hong Kong College of Physicians, attended a launch event for the book in Shanghai on August 16.
The book deals with a type of disease that has been increasingly taking its toll on the population.
According to a report released by China’s National Center for Cardiovascular Diseases last year, there are 290 million suffering from heart disease in China, accounting for one-fourth of the country’s entire population.
The same report said that two in five deaths caused by disease in China stem from cardiovascular diseases, which are literally the No.1 killer.
The book addresses the deficiency of a comprehensive book on knowledge about heart disease in an accessible language and a large amount of misleading information on the internet with its acclaimed authoritativeness and precision in presentation.
“It’s important for the public to know mainstream methods of treating heart disease which are based on evidence-based medicine because some alternative methods with no scientific evidence could cause bad health consequences,” said Ge Junbo, Director of the Department of Cardiology at Zhongshan Hospital in Shanghai and a leading cardiologist in China, during the book’s launch.
The book first discusses some common symptoms which could be related to heart disease, including syncope, palpitations, chest pain, dyspnea and swollen legs, and the most common physical checks in diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases.
It contributes the most space to coronary heart disease (CHD), a family of heart disease which often leads to sudden death. Readers can learn about prevention, treatment methods and rehabilitation after operations. It also addresses frequently asked questions about the relationship between cholesterol level and CHD.
The book also covers valvular heart disease, heart failure, arrhythmias, sudden cardiac death, adult and pediatric congenial heart disease, vascular diseases, pericarditis and cardiomyopathy.
Advice is given to readers who are patients as to how to safely live a normal life, so that patients of atrial fibrillation will know what kind of preventive measures they should take before travelling to destinations at high altitude, what proper sports they can partake in, and what kind of diet is best for them.
Besides heart disease, the book also discusses abnormal blood pressure and lung diseases such as chronic bronchitis, emphysema, primary pulmonary hypertension and pulmonary embolism and their relationship with heart disease.
Apart from disease per se, the book has two chapters devoted to lifestyle problems and heart disease including weight control and sports. Experienced nutritionists were invited to co-author articles answering commonly asked questions in this regard such as what kind of diet is the most effective and how to lose weight while staying healthy.
In a separate chapter the authors clarify some notions about heart disease and sex. They state that heart disease patients don’t necessarily have to abstain from having sex and give instructions to the patients on safe sex. Male CHD patients are warned to take extra care when taking PDE5 inhibitors.
English names of the diseases and medicines as well as medical concepts mentioned in the book are indicated along with Chinese, which makes it easier for readers to look up.
The first edition of the book was published in 2007, and a good part of it was renewed in the second edition to reflect new findings in the field of heart disease over the past 10 years.
The Traditional Chinese version of the second edition was published in Hong Kong last year, and Dr. Lo said the Simplified Chinese version has updated some content from that version.
Dr. Lo graduated from the Pritzker School of Medicine of the University of Chicago in 1978 as a Doctor of Medicine (MD) and has been operating a private clinic for heart disease in Hong Kong since 1987. Author of over 60 articles on heart disease in Hong Kong and international journals of medicine, Dr. Lo has been devoted to the popularization of knowledge on medicine.
He co-authored the book with Alan Yeung, MD, Director of Interventional Cardiology and Chief (Clinical) of Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine.
A few articles in the book were jointly written with medicine experts of various disciplines who practice in Hong Kong and overseas.
The book was published by Fudan University Press.
The book launch was hosted at Zhongshan Hospital by the hospital, the publishing house and Shui On Properties Management Co in Shanghai, and attended by about 100 audience members who were able to consult Dr. Lo and Professor Ge about their heart conditions.
